Ohio Lacked Personal Jurisdiction Over Swiss Elevator Company

Ed Siegert obtained a dismissal of his client, a Swiss elevator manufacturer, based upon a lack of personal jurisdiction. A twelve year-old girl was injured when a glass panel shattered in an elevator car in a hotel in Engelberg, Switzerland. Her parents brought suit in federal court in the Northern District of Ohio against the hotel, the elevator company and numerous other defendants. The elevator company was located in Switzerland, and any work done on the elevator would likewise have been done in that country. Ed was successful in obtaining dismissal of the elevator company based upon a lack of personal jurisdiction in Ohio. (Wolper v. Hotel Europe, 3:07 cv 1948 (N.D. Ohio).
